NIWA and GNS science have compiled the first national assessment of tsunami evacuation zones, including data on roads, buildings and population.
Nine-percent of New Zealanders live in red or orange zones, including 150-thousand children and elderly.

He says tsunami are rare events but have the potential to cause loss of life, and some risks can be minimised.
