Motorists are being urged to plan their weekday travel to avoid the damaged Auckland Harbour Bridge

Motorists are being urged to plan their weekday travel to avoid the damaged Auckland Harbour Bridge

Congestion has been heavy over the weekend on the bridge, surrounding state highways and local roads following Friday's incident where two trucks were blown over causing significant damage to the bridge.

The Transport Agency's Neil Walker says while the bridge is at half its usual capacity the traffic on the Western Ring route has significantly increased.

He says people need to consider working from home if possible or using public transport instead of taking the car.
