Ruapehu's alert level has been raised moderately - to two, and its aviation code changed to yellow - as its crater lake has reached 43 degrees Celsius

Ruapehu's alert level has been raised moderately - to two, and its aviation code changed to yellow - as its crater lake has reached 43 degrees Celsius

The combination of increased lake temperature, volcanic tremor and gas output have motivated the change.

It reflects the current level of volcanic unrest and is not a forecast of future activity.

Level 2 is mostly associated with environmental hazards, but eruptions can still occur with little or no warning.
