Kelvin Davis - who was previously a teacher - says he knows there are challenges, but politics is about taking on hard jobs.
The Children's gig is politically fraught - with Oranga Tamariki repeatedly under fire, including accusations of structural racism.
Davis says he wants the agency to transfer power and resources to Maori.
He says he'd like to change the culture to do things in a Maori way - that maintains culture and dignity.
