Maya Jama wants to “go off the grid” for several months

The 26-year-old model-and-presenter hopes lockdown measures will be lifted so she can “escape” the UK and though she dreams of turning away from social media and relaxing in South America on a backpacking trip, she also needs to allocate some time to her work

She said: “I just want to escape for a year if we’re allowed to and go off the grid.

“But I still want to do lots of work things, so it’s about getting the balance right.

“I plan on taking at least a couple of months off and running away to somewhere like Brazil and coming off social media.”

But while stay-at-home measures are still in place, Maya has been enjoying virtual nights out with her friends.

Asked a typical Friday night in lockdown by HELLO! magazine, she said: “FaceTiming my group chat with bottles of wine and music playing in the background – acting like we’re on a night out.

“It’s good because you can fall asleep when you want and you don’t have to think about how you’re getting home.”

Over the years, the ‘Save Our Summer’ star - who used to date rapper Stormzy - has learned the best way to move forward is not to be disheartened when things don’t go the way she wanted.

She explained: “It’s the bounce back that separates those who get their dreams and those who don’t.

“It’s about not being disheartened by the nos and not feeling like it’s the end when things don’t go your way.

“There have been a few things that have happened that I could swear were my worst nightmare, but I’ve come out the other end and then, actually, you feel a bit invincible.

“I think it’s from having disappointment at a young age. It sounds really sad, but I realised life isn’t perfect, things are going to go wrong, and people are going to let you down.

“It gave me the mentality that, just because this seems really bad right now, it’s not going to last forever. My childhood gave me big resilience.”
