Coroner Mary-Anne Borrowdale concluded 58-year-old Murray Daley killed his partner 61-year-old Ngaire McKenzie, and then committed suicide at her Waipukurau home in 2017.
The report detailed Daley's controlling and manipulative behaviour and said the death's an example of when danger signs are not seen for what they are.
National Network of Family Violence services chief executive Merran Lawler says the Coroner raises public awareness of red flags.
She says they're beyond the typical things we think of, which tend to be broken bones, black eyes and police callouts.
