There are hopes better cervical screening could improve uptake rates

Health advocates countrywide are pushing for the Government to fund self-swabs for cervical cancer.

Family Planning's Jackie Edmond says they've been conducting fewer smears over the past few years.

She says people find it hard to make the time - and put off things they find uncomfortable.

Centre for Women's Health Research Director Bev Lawton says swabs are less invasive than a smear.

She says for some groups like Maori and Pasifika - the area is sacred, and having an exam is embarrassing.

Lawton says the Government was meant to begin funding self swabs three years ago.

The Health Ministry says it's working toward the change.
