An Auckland dementia care facility has made changes after a woman disappeared from its garden never to be seen again

An Auckland dementia care facility has made changes after a woman disappeared from its garden never to be seen again

Helen Maree Dale Wilkins was last seen at Warkworth's Leigh Road Cottage at 5.30pm on November 7, 2017.

Staff didn't realise she was missing until 6.45 the next morning.

A coroner has now declared her dead.

Staff are now required to physically check on residents hourly overnight, a new gate at the front of the facility and a camera has been installed, as have double-sided locks on the back gate.

Alzheimer's New Zealand chief executive Catherine Hall says she's pleased to see the DHB is comfortable with the changes made.
