Alex Reid has been jailed for eight weeks for contempt of court

The 45-year-old former cage fighter - who was married to Katie Price between 2010 and 2012 - has been handed the punishment after he was found to have lied in a witness statement for a compensation claim following a car crash

Reid had previously attempted to claim as much as £61,000 in compensation after his Audi A6 was involved in a collision with a Seat Leon.

He explained that a stranger on a motorbike had agreed to act as a witness to the crash after arriving on the scene.

Reid previously insisted he didn't know the motorbike rider, Darren Summers.

However, Axa Insurance UK subsequently uncovered a newspaper article from 2017 which revealed a link between the two parties.

In the article, it was noted that Summers - a former European and world kickboxing champion - had organised a mixed martial arts masterclass that Reid had attended.

The link led to a court case in January, when Reid confessed to contempt of court.

Axa, who initiated the court proceedings, called on the TV star to be handed jail time and he's now been given an eight-week sentence by the High Court in London.

He will, however, be released after four weeks on licence.

During the court hearing, Justice Eady observed that Reid made a "deliberate falsehood in which the defendant stood to make significant financial gain".

She also rubbished the suggestion that Reid should be treated differently because of his celebrity status.

Gary Pons, Reid's lawyer, argued that the TV star should be spared jail time because his fiancee Nikki Manashe is set to give birth.

What's more, he described Reid as "an individual who has made mistakes, but whose intentions are always good".
