A High Court trial for Tristan Locke is in its third day in Christchurch.
The 31-year-old is accused of murdering neighbour Mark Cowling, after a row over loud music.
Herald reporter Kurt Bayer says Locke the death came after a period of friction.
Locke denies murdering Cowling at a block of Christchurch flats last September - where there had been a history of noise complaints, over Locke allegedly playing loud music.
