Roger Federer has made a winning start to the grass court tennis season in Halle , Germany

The 20-time grand slam champion had not played a competitive match on lawn since losing the 2019 Wimbledon final in five sets to Novak Djokovic.

The 39-year-old withdrew from the French Open fourth round last week.

Meanwhile, Roland Garros finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew from the tournament at short notice due to the death of his grandmother - something he found out about just before the match.
