The freak tornado in Papatoetoe, has left many people trying to work out a way forward

Auckland Council's assessed 251 damaged properties since Saturday's event, which claimed one life.

Inspectors have determined 22 homes are unsafe to live in and placed entry restrictions on 60 more which have dangerous areas.

Building consents general manager Ian McCormick says the next step's rebuilding.

He says they're working with homeowners to understand the best process to remediate the buildings and says luckily, most of the work won't require building consents.
