The virus has a tenancy to cause blood clotting -- which can in turn lead to lung failure, heart problems and stroke.
But, studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have found full-dose blood thinning medication is beneficial for moderately ill covid patients.
Intensive care specialist at Auckland City Hospital Colin McArthur says it's a another step forward in the fight against the virus.
He says they have observed about a 20 per cent reduction in the frequency of patients either dying or going into intensive care -- if they're admitted to hospital.
