John Edwards has been selected as the preferred choice for the UK's Information Commissioner.
The outspoken critic of Facebook and "big tech", has been New Zealand's privacy commissioner since 2014.
Technology commentator Paul Spain says Edwards would be a big loss.
He says it highlights what an incredibly capable person we have in the job here.
