The former deputy Prime Minister alleged Tam helped obtain false documentation for one of the two women who snuck into Northland from Auckland.
The letter from Tam's lawyer, Ron Mansfield QC, calls on Peters to honestly account for his false comments, and the harm they've caused Tam and the community.
It requests a public statement of apology by 5pm on Tuesday to avoid further defamation action which would seek damages.
Tam intends to donate any such damages to charity KidsCan.
