The player-led push for former Australia test cricket captain Tim Paine to retain his spot for the Ashes has gathered further momentum, with Nathan Lyon declaring they want the "best keeper in the world" at the Gabba

Paine stood down as test skipper last week because of a sexting scandal.

Legends Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne have voiced their desire to see Paine dropped for varying reasons.

But players in the current squad have offered strong public and private support of Paine.

There is no indication selectors are considering dropping the 36-year-old.
