Tim Southee has shown his determination on the opening day of New Zealand's first cricket test against India in Kanpur after exiting the field with a right groin twinge

After a swift spot of treatment he returned to the park as one of two pace bowlers alongside Kyle Jamieson in the Black Caps XI on what's expected to be a turning pitch.

The hosts are 258 for four after winning the toss amid a pea soup smog.

Southee has one for 43 from 16.4 overs.

Jamieson took three for 47 from 15.2 overs and says Southee provided inspiration.
