A homicide investigation in underway after the death of a teenager who was assaulted in Christchurch yesterday morning

Levi Haami, who was 18, died surrounded by friends and whanau in Christchurch Hospital today.

Police were initially called to the Countdown carpark on Moorhouse Avenue in Sydenham at about 2am on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Joel Syme says Police are confident they know who assaulted the young man and are seeking that person.

Inspector Syme says they believe this person was solely responsible, and knows Police want to speak with him.

Inspector Syme says a group of people witnessed the assault, and has thanked those who came forward to discuss what they saw.
