New data by Worldline, formerly Paymark, shows spending between December 29 and January 4, reached 696-million-dollars.
It's a seven percent increase on the same period 12 months ago, and a 13 percent increase on pre Covid-19 levels.
Liquor stores saw a 13 percent increase on New Years Eve alone.
Retail NZ spokesperson Aimie Hines says it's because more people have had to spend their holidays in New Zealand.
She says people have taken longer holidays, are out and about more and are spending more time with family and friends.
