Fire crews were called to the fire on Papakura-Clevedon Road in Ardmore around 4pm.
The fire is now contained to the gully where it originated.
Multiple crews will be working in the night but the two helicopters have been stood down.
Fire and Emergency shift manager Josh Pennefather says the fire started from a controlled burn that got out of control.
He says it's a timely reminder that whenever lighting a fire people should do so safely, be aware of weather conditions and have the ability to put the fire out if it gets out of control.
