Suggestions discrimination and stigma are contributing to mental distress for young Maori mothers

Suggestions discrimination and stigma are contributing to mental distress for young Maori mothers

A new report from The Helen Clark Foundation reveals suicide is the leading cause of death during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

Since 2006, more than half of the pregnant or new mothers who died by suicide were Maori.

E Tipu e Rea Whanau Services provides support to young parents.

CEO Zoe Hawke says Maori women who get pregnant young are often frowned upon, which makes them feel ashamed.

She says they hide away, don't connect with the community and suffer in silence.
