Latest research suggests New Zealanders may want the Government to tighten its purse-strings

Latest research suggests New Zealanders may want the Government to tighten its purse-strings

A Taxpayers' Union Curia poll asked one-thousand people if the Government should increase its spending in this Budget.

Only 15 percent say they support new spending, while 65 percent want it kept at the same level and 20 percent are unsure.

Taxpayers' Union spokesperson Louis Houlbrooke says they asked voters across all major parties.

He says even among Labour and Green voters, there's a sense that now is not the time for indulgence.

Big ticket spending already announced includes more than 550-million dollars for Police and 100-million for mental health services.
