Some parts of the West Coast could see up to a metre of rainfall over the next week.
NIWA meteorologist Tristan Meyers says the rainfall is tied to a huge plume of moisture called 'an atmospheric river'.
He says we get a lot of these in New Zealand, and over 70-percent of the normal rainfall for parts of the West Coast are down to them.
MetService has upgraded rain warnings for Buller and Westland to the highest rating of Red - meaning dangerous river conditions and significant flooding are expected.
