Hundreds of Unite Union members working at SkyCity in Auckland are on strike tonight
27 August 2022
Workers are striking for a living wage, with Unite saying it's disgraceful how SkyCity is the only major hotel here refusing to pay a living wage,
So far SkyCity's offered a rise of up to 6 percent for 90 percent of staff, which has been described as a pay cut because of inflation.
Unite spokesperson Mike Treen says it's greedy for SkyCity to maximise their profit.
Mr Treen says SkyCity thought they could make a profit and pay a living wage but ended up withdrawing it during lockdown.
