Christchurch's mayor has reflected on her earliest memories of Queen Elizabeth the Second - ahead of a special memorial service in her honour

Christchurch's mayor has reflected on her earliest memories of Queen Elizabeth the Second - ahead of a special memorial service in her honour

The Civic Service of Thanksgiving will be in the ChristChurch Transitional Cathedral at 5pm on September 25 - Sunday week.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel was nine-years-old when she got her first glimpse of the Queen during her 1970 Royal Visit to New Zealand.

She was gathered with the other school children in the A and P Showgrounds on a very wet day, as the Queen and Prince Philip went by.

Dalziel says the Duke even pointed to one of the other school children in her group, as her feet had sunk into the sodden ground.
