About 130 hectares of coastland is still smouldering in North Canterbury, as fire crews continue to attack the blaze that started on Wednesday night

At its peak more than 200 hectares of scrub between Pegasus Beach, Woodend and Pines Beach was burning - investigators finding fireworks were to blame.

Two young people have been spoken to by Police - one of them has been referred to Youth Aid.

Fire and Emergency Incident Controller, Graeme Knight, says today's focus is to strengthen containment lines and to dampen down hotspots.

Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon is now wanting a national ban on private fireworks.
