Emergency services were called to the Hawke's Bay attraction, just before 9pm yesterday -- with ten fire trucks attending.
Witness Chris Morris says the blaze spread fast, reaching 100 metres down the steep eastern slope towards Craggy Range.
Morris says it was under control once firefighters reached the summit and began attacking it.
The access road has been closed.
