70 year old Owen Young was knocked off and hit his head during his regular Sunday morning cycle from Auckland's Herne Bay to Bombay.
He died in hospital.
The driver charged with careless driving causing death - says he didn't see Young until it was too late.
He has been sentenced to 200 hours community work and is disqualified from driving for 12 months.
Young's son says his father would want the driver to reflect on his actions, but also be able to move on with his life in peace.
