The Ministry of Health has confirmed the highly infectious sub-variant labelled the 'Kraken' has been detected in New Zealand

The ministry says the Institute of Environmental Science and Research reported genome sequencing for two covid cases with XBB.1.5 late last week.

They say its detection is not unexpected, after recently being found in Australia.

A total of 21,685 new total Covid cases have been reported in the past week.
