Opener Suzie Bates is lamenting the White Ferns' sloppy fielding in the wake of their 97-run thumping at the hands of Australia in their Twenty20 World Cup opener in South Africa

The defending champions scored an imposing 173 for nine first-up with the bat.

Better fielding wouldn't have made much of a difference given New Zealand were then skittled for just 76 with both Bates and Sophie Devine going for golden ducks.

Bates says they should've given themselves more of a chance.
