MetService is advising Wellingtonians to stay indoors, and off the roads, until heavy rain has eased

A narrow line of heavy downpours has left parts of the city with surface flooding -- with about 14.7 millimetres of rainfall in one hour.

Videos have emerged on social media of Aro Valley footpaths, turning into streams.

Meteorologist Jessie Owen says the conditions could be dangerous for drivers.

She says the best thing is to keep off the roads.
