Shock in the Northland town of Kaikohe this morning, following the violent death of a woman in her home

Police say she was injured in a struggle with an intruder on Taraire Street about 11.30 last night.

She died at the scene and a homicide investigation is underway.

Far North Mayor and Kaikohe local Moko Tepania describes it as terrible and scary news to wake up, in what is a very close-knit community.

He's offering his condolesences and aroha to everyone involved.
