On June 4th, 1943 the Cromwell to Dunedin express train derailed on a bend near Hyde in Otago.
Of the 113 passengers aboard the pre-Kings Birthday service, 21 were killed and 47 were injured.
A Commission of Inquiry later found the train was travelling at excessive speed and the engine driver served prison time for manslaughter.
A memorial marks the accident site today.
