Another step in redeveloping Nelson Hospital is welcomed, but frustration is running high over project delays

An initial 73 million dollars of Government funding will enable work to progress on a new acute services and inpatient building.

Nelson mayor Nick Smith says Government has a record of announcing large sums of money without following through on delivery - but he's committed to working with any political party.

He says there's frustration work has been put back three years, and that's why it's important they get the investment to ensure they have a fit-for-purpose facility for the next half centaury.

Construction is to begin in 2026.
