    A Civil Aviation Authority investigator has made several recommendations, following the death of a pilot whose plane crashed while flying across the Southern Alps


    Tim Gibb was travelling from his hometown of Franz Josef to Rangiora in poor weather in August 2022, when his Cessna crash near Mount Nicholson.

    CAA investigator Lou Child's report reveals Gibb had just made the decision to turn back due to worsening conditions, when the crash happened.

    Child has issued several safety messages, including cautioning pilots from relying only on uncertificated weather forecasts, and recommending they complete a mountain flying training course.
