Auckland Council has adopted a plan for growing the city over the next 30 years

Auckland Council has adopted a plan for growing the city over the next 30 years

The Future Development Strategy focuses on building efforts for new housing upwards in existing suburbs, rather than outwards into undeveloped land.

It includes a stronger stance on responding to climate change than the draft plan -- including protecting people and property from the risk of flooding.

Planning, Environment and Parks Committee chair Richard Hills says around 10-thousand submissions were made.

He says about 70 percent of submitters were in favour of the plan, and it passed with an 18 to three vote - which is big support around the council table.
