    Residents of Te Karaka in Tairawhiti are being told to prepare for evacuations as rain continues to lash the region


    Tairawhiti Civil Defence is asking people to leave their homes and take their pets and food supply with them if the Waipaoa River rises another half metre.

    Te Karaka Area School has been set up as a shelter for those needing somewhere to go.

    An Orange Heavy Rain Warning is in place in the region for another hour.

    The highest rainfall recorded was at Waimata at Monowai Bridge - with 135 millimetres of rain recorded in the last 24 hours to 7am this morning.
