Parts of the lower North Island are still experiencing strong winds, despite an Orange warning lapsing

Wellington and Wairarapa south of Tararua District saw severe northwesterly gales, with speeds of up to 120 kilometres an hour, until 11am this morning.

The Tararua Range is also under an Orange Heavy Rain warning until about 3pm, as a front makes its way up the country.

MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan says it's still gusty in Wellington, but not as severe as earlier today.

He says there will be a change in wind direction to southerlies this afternoon, bringing cooler temperatures and rain, as the front moves north.
