The Wellington Phoenix women have moved to within a point of the A-League leaders after a 2-nil win over the Newcastle Jets at Sky Stadium

Venezuelan Mariana Speckmaier opened the scoring in the 34th minute from the penalty spot.

Speckmaier then assisted Hope Breslin in slotting the second goal in the 39th.

The Phoenix move to third on the table, a point behind the Perth Glory and Melbourne City.

Coach Paul Temple says they needed the result after last week's loss to Adelaide.
