Firefighters across Canterbury continue to be on high alert

Firefighters across Canterbury continue to be on high alert

The region's seen soaring temperatures, beyond 30 degrees this week, and crews have worked to extinguish fires in Amberly, Loburn and one near Lake Benmore earlier in the week.

A blaze which flared up yesterday around the Waimakariri River bed near Swannanoa is now contained.

MetService Meteorologist Paul Ngamanu says winds have become even warmer and drier in Canterbury, due to the heavy rain in Westland.

He says very little moisture made its way over to Canterbury, which increases the dry conditions in the region.
