In May 2022, Tom Coombes was walking home from uni when he was fatally stabbed.
Justice Ian Gault heard testimony from two psychiatrists who have interviewed the accused -- who has a history of schizophrenia.
The man will remain at the Mason Clinic, where he's been getting treatment, and Justice Gault will decide later this year whether he should stay there indefinitely.
The defendant's trial was due to begin next week.
