The Defence Force has been called in to dispose of a suspicious item in Rotorua

Police say they were notified of a suspicious vehicle at the intersection of Ford Road and Sunset Road in the suburb of Mangakakahi just before 10 last night.

They say an item of interest was located inside the vehicle and is being disposed of by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

A witness says they saw someone abandon a vehicle, and saw police cordon off the area and knock on doors.

    Police say enquiries are ongoing.
