A Coroner's report has concluded an e-scooter rider's life could've been saved if he was wearing a helmet when he crashed

53-year-old Thiyagalingam Thanababu hit a concrete power pole in Auckland's Sandringham while riding a modified e-scooter in March 2021.

The mechanic was travelling between 36 and 41 kilometres per hour when he crashed.

He died six days later in hospital.

Transport authorities are being urged to re-think whether helmets should be mandatory for electric scooter riders.
