A youth charity leader says there's a small group of persistent youth offenders who need different help

The Government's announced military academies for youth offenders - with Oranga Tamariki leading a pilot programme from mid this year.

Blue Light Chief Operating Officer Brendon Crompton says it's a residential programme that's more intensive.

He says the part they may be involved in, is wrap-around support for when they leave the programmes.
