The Black Caps bowled the Aussies out for 256 after lunch on day two of the second test - then fought back with the bat to reach stumps on 134 for two.
The hosts lead by 40 runs.
Kane Williamson made 51 and put on 105 with Tom Latham for the second wicket.
Williamson isn't willing to say how big a lead might be enough against the Aussies.
Latham will resume on 65 with Rachin Ravindra also not out on 11.
