Police have taken charge of the inquiry into the disappearance of a man from a fishing boat off Hawke's Bay on Monday night

Police have taken charge of the inquiry into the disappearance of a man from a fishing boat off Hawke's Bay on Monday night

Searchers were stood down yesterday evening, about 24 hours after the man was reported overboard from a boat about 11 kilometres offshore of Waimarama.

A police spokesman says officers are gathering information and will continue working alongside Maritime NZ and Coastguard.

Hawke's Bay deputy harbourmaster Adrian Wright says the circumstances of how he ended up overboard from the Pacific Challenger are unclear.
