Severe weather warnings are in place for some regions this morning

Watch out for strong winds in the Canterbury High Country and heavy rainfall in South Island's West Coast.

But cooler temperatures will wrap the country this weekend.

MetService says sunshine will be back for most, in the final few days of the school holidays.

Meteorologist John Law says colder air will return to the south tonight, and will spread up the country, despite the skies clearing.

He says it's well worth keeping those extra layers close by, throughout the weekend.
