Christina Applegate had to wear diapers after she contracted a virus from a salad

The 52-year-old actress - who was diagnosed with degenerative neurological condition multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021 - was already unwell after contracting COVID-19, which led to a chest infection and her heart racing, when she woke up in a "pool of s***" and had to resort to the absorbent underwear to be more comfortable.

During an episode of the 'MeSsy' podcast, which the 'Bad Moms' star hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, she said: "I'm gonna be gross. I woke up at three o'clock in the morning in a pool of s***.

"Didn't know it happened, and having MS at three o'clock in the morning and trying to change your sheets, it's not fun. But this brings me to my next point, which we can talk about: I'm wearing diapers."

The 'Crash Pad' star was later diagnosed with sapovirus - a virus that can infect and inflame the digestive system - after she took a stool test when she found she was "so sick [she] could't eat" and believes she contracted the bug from a take away salad she'd picked up at a restaurant she'd frequented for 15 years.

She said: "[I was] p****** out of my a** for a few days to the point where I was so dizzy. I was so sick, I couldn't eat, I couldn't [do] anything.

"And finally I had to do one of those samples, which is fun, and that's sarcasm, as you know - because you poop into a receptacle and then you have to scoop your own poop into vials.

"And it was so gross I started vomiting while doing this.

"Anywho, [the test] came back [and] I had something called sapovirus. It is when you ingest the faecal matter of someone else from your food. Someone else's poop went into my mouth and I ate it."

Christina then joked she was meant to be visiting her brother Kyle who had just had a baby, but decided to miss out on the occasion because she would "s*** in the car".

Although the 'Dead to Me' star didn't explain when she contracted the virus, the podcast noted on Instagram that "parts of this episode were recorded in 2023."
