Half of the young people remanded to Auckland community justice home are walking out the door

Half of the young people remanded to Auckland community justice home are walking out the door

Oranga Tamariki briefings obtained by the Herald, under the Official Information Act, show 49-percent of those placed in the homes in Auckland between August 2020 and February 2023, escaped.

Nationwide, 40-percent, in the same period, escaped.

The community homes are intended for lower level offenders going through the justice system - as an alternative to secure youth justice facilities.

The majority are run by contracted social services providers - with a few run directly by Oranga Tamariki.
