A fire that destroyed a Southland home has claimed the lives of a mother and her 11-year-old son

A fire that destroyed a Southland home has claimed the lives of a mother and her 11-year-old son

A blaze broke out at the Manapouri property just after 3.30 yesterday morning.

Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy says a couple and a child were living in the View Street rental house, but the man was away working when fire broke out.

He says they're satisfied nobody else was at the property.

Investigators are working to determine what started the fire.
